CEO of the Migration Council Australia (MCA) Ms Carla Wilshire expressed disappointment in the CFMEU campaign noting that it may fuel anti-migration sentiment and play on the fears of local workers.
The MCA strongly supports 457 visas as they play a critical role in securing foreign investment and enabling growth. It is a program that helps create Australian jobs.
The MCA’s recent report More than Temporary: Australia’s 457 visa program found that the 457 program plays an important role in building Australia’s human capital and it is a program which the government should be rightly proud of.
A survey of 3,800 visa holders found that 76 per cent of visa holders help to train and develop Australian workers.
“The MCA is concerned that scare campaigns will undermine the confidence of the Australian people in our migration program, weaken social cohesion and undercut our broader national interests.
“With Australia’s aging population and workforce, migration is critical to our future prosperity.
“The Scanlon Foundation Mapping Social Cohesion Survey has found that 77 per cent of Australians support skilled migration,” she said.
“457 visa holders contribute their skills, pay taxes and help build our economy and country.”
Access Economics estimates that the 457 program generated $2.2 billion for the budget bottom line over a three year period.
The MCA decries rorting and supports improved supervision and enforcement. However, all parties should work to ensure the 457 visa system is not frustrated by over regulation.
